Amsterdam Dance Event or ADE in short is a spectacular couple of days and nights where people from the music industry from all over the whole world flock to Amsterdam to come to seminars, workshops, conventions, and also the locations connected to this event.
The nights are where I come in.
As most people who know me know that I am the resident photographer for Escape Amsterdam.
This edition of ADE was my 12th or 13th time of photographing these nights.
I am used to photographing (in) the massive crowds, I am not afraid to come close to the dj's and the performers.
Still I need to take a deep breath before I go into the crowd because I have to walk on my toes, hold my camera in the air with my right hand, and try not to fall because it is tight in between the people and I also photograph them while I am in there. It took me about 30 minutes to get myself from the front to the back of the main room and I had to do that several times per night.
There were 4 nights in total for this edition of Amsterdam Dance Event.
The first ADE night was "Bob Sinclar presents Paris by night" which was fabulous. Bob had an essemble of drag queens and entourage with him who filled up the DJ booth and the vip sections next to it. It looked like something that can be seen in Moulin Rouge, I loved photographing this! The drag queens and performers made it all the more exciting and they didn't hold back at all when I photographed them. It was trés bíen!!! A terrific night if you ask me.
The second ADE night was "Chuckie & Friends" which was more of a urban house music night.
It was mad packed, so much so that it was almost impossible to get through the crowds but I did it. And I did that a bunch of times. Sometimes it amazes me that other photographers only make overview photos while I get in there and photograph the people ín the crowd. It was a nice night overall and since I have seen Chuckie perform three times now I kind of knew what to expect, it's just new every time with a different crowd. I liked it a lot.
On the third ADE night French superstar DJ Martin Solveig had his night "My House by Martin Solveig" at Escape Amsterdam.
I start every ADE night exactly one hour earlier than I normally do and I also leave an hour later. I do this because in the beginning of the evening I can still walk around kind of freely, without bumping into people and I can also photograph the warm up dj's and focus on what I need to photograph during these nights.
In this case there were Coco Cole, Kungs, and some more warm up dj's because Martin Solveig would appear for his own set around 2:30 according to the time table.
I photographed whoever wanted to be photographed, there were dancers from Showpony every thirthy minutes (it felt like 30 but it could also be once every hour, I don't know, I couldn't keep up or go through the crowd to get close because.....)
Suddenly the main room was mad packed, and because this was on a Saturday night I also had to photograph at the Escape deLux ánd was expected to photograph at de Kroon. Next door. I did that too. Go through the hundreds of people, find my way to these other packed locations and get back and all in time to photograph what was needed to be photographed.
Time went by and Martin Solveig came on, on time, and the crowd went wild!
Nice to see how people react to dj's.
The fourth and final night of Amsterdam Dance Event 2017 concluded with "BE BIGGER BY BIGGI" and this was by far the most relaxed night of all. The music was chill and the people were gorgeous. It was crowded but not as packed as the previous nights and certainly not as "dark" as the previous years at closing nights of ADE. I loved the music. The men and women who attented the evening dressed beautifully and it was all mellow.
I never heard music played or made by Biggi but it was right in my street!
Music that I play at home. Oldskool R&B and HipHop.
Before I knew it the night was over and that also concluded my ADE 2017 experience which was, to be fair : wonderful and exhausting. Meaning working all night and when I got back home right after the nights I went on to work on the photos to have them online as soon as possible.
Check out the photos from this night below.
Amsterdam Dance Event to me means personal perseverance, to give and take energy so that I can photograph the people at their best, the dj's, the entertainment, and the overview photos which require timing and patience. And also to show the people, the Escape, and everyone who will see the photos that I have the loyalty and the will to do my very best to create powerful photographs even under the most difficult of situations even for four or more nights in a row.
I hope that you enjoyed this blog, if so... leave a comment! I'd love it if you did!
