I have always been fond of supermodels, their presence on the runways, their attitude, their looks.
Fearless women who walked the runway like no other.
I heard about Marpessa before I met her years later just like I heard about Naomi Campbell, Karen Mulder, Tyra Banks, Linda Evangelista and all the supermodels who ruled the 80’s and 90’s from fashion magazines and on fashion websites.
I also knew from video’s that I had seen on Youtube that Marpessa walked the runway for Gianni Versace, Christian Lacroix, Valentino, Christian Dior, Gianfranco Ferré, Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein, Issey Miyake, Moschino, Claude Montana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Comme des Garçons, Lanvin, Thierry Mugler, Donna Karan, Trussardi, Mila Schön, Rifat Özbek, Bruce Oldfield, Ted Lapidus, and Betty Jackson. She was given the name "the catwalk contessa", and is the Global Ambassador for Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda line, and she stars in Bryan Ferry’s music video “Slave to love”
When I was active on Twitter I got in touch with Marpessa and I enjoyed her tweets and we would tweet to each other and later we found each other on Facebook.
One day I recieved an email from Sunny Jansen who was arranging Marpessa’s ‘Glam Jam in the Dam’ birthday celebration in the council chamber of “Sofitel Legend the Grand” in Amsterdam together with Roger Brunings, Sunny told me that Marpessa personally wanted me to be her photographer!
Ofcourse I said YES! No doubt about it!
The day came and I went to the Sofitel Legend the Grand were a special wall was set-up and I had my battery pack and softbox with me, my tripod and my camera.
I knew what I wanted and everything was set up, so that was all good, camera on a tripod, the light was exactly as I wanted it to be so that the people who would stand before me had great light, great lighting is very important!
I wanted everyone to look glamorous on the photo’s.
Slowly but surely people came in and the first thing they had to do was pass by me.
I greeted everyone with kindness and then I took two photo’s per person or per group, quick yet in control so that they would not be bothered by me, which could’ve been the case if I would take too long.
The moment came that Marpessa was ready to enter the festivity and she came out rocking a beautiful vintage Valentino dress, when we met I got a big hug and a kiss and then I photographed her with her friends and also with her beautiful daughter Ariël, and also with her father.
It made me feel special being in her presence and there were a lot of family members and friends, but also photographers like Edland Man, designers like Rolf from Viktor&Rolf and Bas Kosters, Illustrator Marc-Antoine Coulon, Stylist Roel Schagen, Fiona Hering from Vogue (NL), and there were top-models, editors and editors-in-chief from the international fashion industry.
This was an amazing one off experience and also an honor because I was chosen by Marpessa herself, I loved meeting her and also everyone who attended and I can honestly say that Marpessa is adorable and fabulous!
A cool interview and photo's of Marpessa on the Shrimpton Couture website.
